Dr. Bundy Represented FSPHP at the FSMB Workgroup on Re-entry in Washington, DC, on September 9th.
|
Dr. Bundy presented the FSPHP’s comments on the FSMB Draft Policy on Reentry to Practice, collaborating with representatives from the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the American Hospital Association, the American Board of Medical Specialties, and the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists to share insights on this important policy. His presentation emphasized the critical role that Physician Health Programs (PHPs) play in facilitating and supporting the return to work for their participants.
The FSMB Workgroup on Reentry to Practice was established in 2023 under the leadership of FSMB Past-Chair Dr. Jeffrey Carter and is currently chaired by Katie Templeton, JD. This workgroup is tasked with updating FSMB policies related to reentry to practice, including a review of state medical board rules and practices, FSMB policy, and academic literature. Their goal is to provide comprehensive guidance on several key areas, including:
- The duration a physician may be away from practice before needing to complete a reentry program.
- Defining clinical activities that state medical boards consider relevant for maintaining a full and unrestricted medical license.
- The potential creation of a distinct license type for physicians in non-clinical roles.
- Reentry considerations for Physician Assistants (PAs) in both supervised and unsupervised settings.
- The implications of disciplinary history on a physician's reentry process and their ability to supervise other physicians and PAs during their return.
- Educational resources and activities that enhance a physician's ability to demonstrate fitness for reentry into the workforce.
- Competency assessment tools for state medical boards to evaluate physicians' readiness to return to practice.
