Dr. Wirt (Andy) Hines is a dermatologist who runs a private practice in Anacortes, Washington, specializing in medical, surgical, and aesthetic dermatology. He holds double-board certifications in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery and Medical Dermatology. Dr. Hines earned both an M.D. and a Ph.D. in Human Genetics from the University of Utah, where he focused on molecular biology and gene transcription. He has authored scientific publications on topics such as melanoma vaccines, infectious diseases, cardiomyopathy, and gene transcription, with this research supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the American Heart Association, and the Dee Foundation. Beyond his practice, Dr. Hines contributes to the medical community by serving as a clinical instructor for Seattle University, training ARNP students in dermatology, holds the position of Vice President of the Skagit and Island Counties Medical Society, a Voting Delegate for the Washington State Medical Association, and past-president of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Skagit County. At this session, Dr. Hines shares his deeply personal journey navigating bipolar disorder, life-altering legal challenges, and the path to professional and personal redemption. He highlights the critical role of physician wellness programs, mental health support, and resilience, from both a structured recovery and accountability standpoint. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of bipolar disorder’s impact on high-stress professionals and the importance of reducing stigma to foster compassionate care and holistic well-being in physician health programs.
