The origins of WAME

The World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) was launched in Bellagio, Italy on 16 March 1995 after a three day conference to consider international cooperation among editors of peer-reviewed medical journals.

The Bellagio Conference produced a report, "Launching the World Association of Medical Editors," which outlined the reasons for this initiative and projected the next steps to its fruition.

The inaugural meeting of WAME was held as part of the International Congress on Biomedical Peer Review and Global Communications in September 1997 in Prague. This Congress followed the 2 highly successful International Congresses on Peer Review in Biomedical Publication, held in 1989 and 1993. WAME held another meeting at the Peer Review Congress in 2005 in Chicago, where an Ethics Discussion and a Business Meeting took place.
